Are there cracks or chips in your stone? Select Stone Service is a local, family-owned company with years of experience in professional stone restoration. Even if the problem seems minor, a free consultation with our experts can determine whether the problem is a priority.
When Select Stone Service fabricates and installs counters, showers, and other stone features, we primarily work with granite, quartz, and porcelain. However, we can do repair work for any type of stone including marble, travertine, and soapstone.
While granite and quartz are hard, durable materials, they are not entirely impervious to damage. Each material is susceptible to:
Chips: This most commonly occurs on the edges of a granite surface such as a countertop. Usually, chips in granite are repaired with an epoxy mix that matches the granite color. We repair chips in granite, quartz, and porcelain surfaces.
Cracks: While rare, if a crack has formed in your granite you will need to address the problem immediately. Quartz or granite countertop crack repair can often be performed with a mixture of epoxy or resin and granite dust.
Scratches: In the rare instance that a harder material than granite rubs against it, scratches may occur. If this happens, we can address the problem by buffing out the scratch and applying a new seal.
Etching: This occurs when a chemical, usually an acid, eats away at the top layer of your stone. Shallow etching is easier to tackle while deeper etching requires more extensive work. The basic process will involve thoroughly cleaning out the etched area, buffing the stone, and re-applying sealant and polishing.
Burnt Resin: If you've placed something hot on a quartz surface, you may notice scorch marks. Similar heat damage can occur on granite, depending on the type of sealant used. Some burn marks can be scrubbed out, but others require more than simple elbow grease.
Seam Damage: If significant separation, chips or cracks occur around your quartz or granite countertop seam, we can repair and restore it to its original state.
At Select Stone Service we understand that addressing every little scratch can be a hassle, and may not be worth your while. However, most damage to your stone will need to be addressed as soon as possible, if only to prevent it from worsening.
Consider:
● Chips and cracks will become larger over time and could lead to injury. ● If you leave a problem with your stone unattended for too long, it can become unfixable.
● Damaged stone can also ruin its appearance, which could affect your property's value if you plan to sell your home.
Cracks are one of the problems that need immediate attention. If left unattended to, the crack can spread and necessitate a costly replacement rather than a timely repair.
The old saying “the best defense is a good offense” definitely applies to stone maintenance.
Certain stone types, namely granite, marble, and travertine, will need to be sealed periodically to protect the stone from water seeping into pores in the rock. While you may wish to do this yourself, you can also call Select Stone Service and we'll take care of it for you.
